Description

This is an absolute one of a kind Paleo point set. It’s a result of an idea I had years ago to create a set of points from a single chunk of unique rock that would appear as a prehistoric landscape panorama. This 7-point set is even more unique. It replicates and celebrates the complete spectrum of prehistoric fluted points, protected in a solid oak display case. By virtue of the unique material, alone, it literally can’t be duplicated. It also has an amazing bonus. This set’s reverse side presents a second, totally different landscape panorama! The following information will provide you with fascinating definition.

Between 9,000 to 15,000 years ago, Paleo hunters throughout North America created 3 distinct types of fluted points with which they used to hunt game as large as mammoths. I created this set of 3 Clovis, 2 Cumberland and 2 Folsom points from a single piece of very unique Polychrome Jasper from Madagascar. It’s an artistic celebration of the ongoing mystery of these Paleo people. They achieved an advanced degree of flintknapping skill, ultimately developing 3 distinctly different types of fluted points. Clovis points were sturdy and highly functional as projectile points and sometimes as knives. The unique fishtail-tapered Cumberlands, though very streamlined projectile points, were thicker in cross section and likely more often used as cutting tools. The flute channels often ran most of the points length. Then there’s the enigmatic Folsom points. These are an example of extreme fluted projectile point refinement, seldom more than 3″ but made astonishingly thin with meticulously flaked edges. The degree of skill used to create them was even more impressive when combined with the risky practice of fluting them to the very tip.

Developing my Panorama Point art has taken time, finding the unique piece of rock suitable for it has taken time, and letting this set go has taken time. I created it several years ago to celebrate these 3 fascinating cultures which created and used fluted points. The time has now come for this exhibition of Paleo technology and art to occupy a new venue. It’s destined for someone who can enjoy and appreciate these fascinating peoples’ creative technology and the exceptional material from which it’s knapped.
